Fender Road Worn ’72 Telecaster Custom and ’72 Telecaster Deluxe

While the Standard Telecaster reigns as one of the most popular solidbody guitars of all time, Fender’s humbucker-equipped Telecaster variations—like the Custom and Deluxe, both introduced in 1972—have more of a cult following. However, both models have found favor with great players who don’t always run with the herd. Keith Richards is one of a handful of guitarists who adopted the Telecaster Custom and its unique humbucker neck/single-coil bridge configuration, while Thom Yorke, Lee Ranaldo and Dave Grohl count among the dual-humbucker Telecaster Deluxe’s devoted fans.

Fender recently added Telecaster Custom and Deluxe models to its expanding, popular line of Road Worn guitars, which have the aged look and worn-in feel of a well-loved battle-ax. Both models are relatively accurate reproductions of the original versions, but they sell for three to four times less than what you’d pay for their vintage counterparts.

Keith Richards fans are certain to gravitate toward the Road Worn Telecaster Custom, which looks almost identical to the black 1975 Tele Custom that he often plays in concert. While previous Road Worn models have included several modern “hot-rodded” enhancements, those modifications are absent and missed on the Tele Custom. Fender opted for vintage-style frets, which are lower profiled, thinner and an acquired taste along with the Custom’s 7 1/2–inch curved radius, but then again, this ax is for players who are already familiar with vintage guitars. The single-coil Tele bridge pickup provides more jangle than twang, but the neck humbucker is a welcome addition that gives added punch to open G–tuning rhythms.

The Deluxe has medium jumbo frets, but they are a little on the small side. However, the flatter 12-inch radius feels good under the fingers. The pair of humbuckers gives the guitar attractive fat tone that’s almost like single-coil P90 pickups but with a little more weight. This is a great guitar for pounding out “wall of sound” rhythms (no wonder so many rhythm guitarists have leaned toward this model), but it also holds its own quite nicely for lead players who desire bold, aggressive tones for solos.

I’m not sure why Fender decided to revive the much-disparaged three-bolt Micro-Tilt neck mounting design, but the neck felt solid and secure throughout my trials, and the tonal benefits outweigh the initial set-up hassles.

Gibson SG Standard 24 press release

1961 merupakan tahun di mana Soviet menempatkan manusia pertama di luar angkasa, Yuri Gagarin diikuti oleh AS di bulan Mei dengan Alan Shepard. Konstruksi Tembok Berlin dimulai, keterlibatan langsung pertama militer AS di Vietnam terjadi dan musik populer termasuk Chubby Checker's Pony Sisa dan Will You Love Me Tomorrow oleh Shirelles.

Busyeet..!

Gibson Randy Rhoads Les Paul Custom

The guitar is based on Randy’s 1974 original Les Paul Custom, with 200 VOS and just 100 Aged examples available world-wide. This VOS is finished in Randy Rhoads White which, to our eyes at least, is a little heavy on the yellow.
It features a pair of brand new pickups, a pair of Gibson Custom's new Super '74 humbuckers that reside beneath two worn covers. The units are based around Alnico III magnets for added authenticity and sound very cool indeed.
The pickups are selected by a standard Switchcraft three-way toggle that, here, also beards a brass tip and plate, just like Randy’s. The quartet of controls are classified as CTS 500k audio-taper potentiometers, and work perfectly.
The Gibson logo is bereft of the dot over the eye, just as the original mid-seventies Customs were, and the headstock is pitched at 17 degrees. The neck is fashioned from three pieces of mahogany and the very smooth ebony board features 22 medium jumbo frets. Model is numbered RR127 and the rear of the headstock also bears tuner holes to recreate the aperture left when Randy switched out the originals. Each guitar comes with its own Custom Shop hard case that bears the man’s squiggle. Is there anything as cool as an aged Alpine White Les Paul Custom? Tone down the yellow of the finish and  be sold.

With an impressive two songs in Gibson.com’s Top 50 Guitar Solos of All Time (“Crazy Train” and “Mr. Crowley”) and a legion of fans still worshiping his unparalleled shredding abilities 28 years after his blazing career was cut short, Randy Rhoads is firmly established as one of the brightest stars in the metal-guitar heavens. After forming Quiet Riot while still in his teens, Rhoads stepped up his game when Ozzy Osbourne asked him to audition for his own band in 1979. Along came Rhoads, a practice amp in one hand, and his beloved 1974 Les Paul Custom in the other – and before the young guitarist had even finished his warm-up licks, Osbourne told him “you’ve got the gig.” What followed was an amazing ascent, but a too-swift ending, which earned Randy Rhoads a unique place in rock history.

To honor this achievement, Gibson Custom is releasing the Randy Rhoads 1974 Les Paul Custom, an instrument crafted in the image of Rhoads’s own much-loved, much-played instrument, and limited to only 100 hand-aged and 200 VOS guitars. Don’t be fooled by the light yellow color in the live shot. Gibson artisans have worked closely with the Rhoads family to perfectly reproduce the exact rich amber color of the original guitar. Rendered in period detail, the Randy Rhoads 1974 Les Paul Custom captures all the fire and aggression of this hard-rock favorite of the early ’70s, including numerous details that were particular to the model’s production for a relatively short period of time. Specific woods, pickups and dimensions have been painstakingly recreated by Gibson Custom, and the precise look of Rhoads’s own guitar also has been captured. One hundred examples of the Randy Rhoads 1974 Les Paul Custom will be hand-aged by Gibson Custom to match the playing wear and road abuse experienced by the star’s guitar, while another 200 will be treated to Gibson Custom’s VOS process to present the look of a gently aged instrument. All in all, this is the closest any fan, player or collector can get to owning Rhoads’s own guitar… without owning Rhoads’s own guitar.

20 cool electric guitars under £300

Added three new dirt-cheap workhorses with 24 frets to get you up to that super high E and beyond! See them all on the first three slides of this gallery or, if it's your first time here, keep on scrolling for a selection of guitars to suit every player - all under £300...

Round-up of 13 electric guitars under £200 was a devil-horned foray into the beginners’ world of aspiring Jack Whites on a budget. However, it’s surprising what an extra £100 will buy you. Granted, guitars under £300 still stand firmly in 'first guitar' territory, but the upgrades to materials, hardware, electronics and finish are noticeable, even to novice eyes and ears.
MusicRadar’s expertly critical community have already chosen the best electric guitars under £300, and it’s an essential read for anyone in the market for a quality budget axe. But there are so, so many more - more brands, more styles, more options. Here then, hand-picked from the pages of Total Guitar, are 17 more cool-as electric guitars under £300, all well worthy of your consideration. First up: Kramer Striker 211 Custom...
Despite being re-branded for the new millennium, we suspect shred legend Kramer is still happiest knocking out ‘80s widdlesticks, and likely needed all its willpower not to scallop the Striker’s 24 frets.
Boringly, it’s built on a derivative doublecut shape, but with a mix ’n’ match pickup configuration and floating vibrato it’s well up for the fight.
Minor finish issues (untidy frets, wires visible in the pickup cavities, stiff micro-tuners) are swept aside by a strong physical performance, with a flat neck, low action, light strings and the test’s best access confirming that, yes, the Striker is aimed directly at technicians.
Indeed, you’ll play so fast that it will take a moment to realise that tonal character is a little thin on the ground. Five options are on the table, but the general impression is of competence, rather than brilliance, with the bridge humbucker crunching away without scaring the horses and the twin singlecoils bringing admirable bite but negligible body.
It’s better dirty, though.

Jackson X Series Phil Demmel PDX Demmelition King V and Mark Morton Dominion D2

It's nice to know Phil Demmel’s Demmelition and Mark Morton’s Dominion Artist Signature Series Jackson guitars are available to anyone who wants to play the instruments that these metal icons wield. Now Jackson is offering both models in its budget-conscious X Series as the Phil Demmel PDX Demmelition King V and Mark Morton Dominion D2. Their low prices aside, the stimulating performance aspects of these guitars may make them preferable to their high-end counterparts for certain types of players. Plus, each comes with a Jackson gig bag.

PHIL DEMMEL PDX DEMMELITION KING V
King V body shapes convey an aggressive attitude, but those jetfighter wings also create powerful sustain and a distinct low end. Alder keeps the long body from becoming a shoulder anchor, and beveled edges make the radical form easy on the arms and belly. Jackson’s own Floyd Rose–licensed Jackson double-locking bridge floats in a route that allows the bar to be dropped or pulled up. In place of the higher-priced Demmelition’s active EMGs, this incarnation features a passive set of EMG-HZ humbuckers.
Jackson gave the PDX Demmelition hard-hitting punch by bolting the maple neck to the body, instead of using the original King V’s neck-through-body configuration. The neck almost perfectly replicates the thin U-shaped profile, jumbo frets and shark fin inlays that made Charvel/Jackson Model 4 and 6 guitars some of the fastest and most beloved of the era. Sweeping feels second nature across this wide, compound radius board, and the huge frets facilitate two-handed tapping.

The PDX Demmelition features a combination of essential metal characteristics: chunky and thick low-mids, fierce bass notes, slightly scooped mids and controlled highs. The passive EMG-HZ pickups may be a cost-effective compromise, but their loud, raw output drove the front end of my Mesa Mk IIC+ hard and provided perhaps the most organic and hollow tones that I’ve heard from any EMG. There were no blurred notes from the PDX Demmelition, even in the lowest registers. Chords came through with defined authority, and the guitar’s innate ability to produce certain odd-order harmonics translated into an angry personality.

PERFORMANCE
The Dominion D2’s surging string energy produces explosive harmonics, dynamics and sustain, especially in front of a high-gain amp. Blazing mids blooms are balanced by warm lows and clear highs. Like the mids, the highs are particularly responsive to attack and therefore capable of being razor sharp or round and smooth. A change in touch can turn stinging staccato lines into wailing sustain.

THE BOTTOM LINE
Jackson's X Series Phil Demmel PDX Demmelition King V and Mark Morton Dominion D2 are affordable options for fans of the original Dominion and Demmelition guitars. More importantly, they each capture old-school vibes in their own way, which are enjoyably different from their high-end brethren.
